Assessment of Impacts of the Communal Grazing on Utilization, Conservation and Development of Range Resources in Low Rainfall Woodland Savannah of North Kordofan State, Sudan

Abstract


The experiment was conducted to study the assessment impacts of communal grazing of the rangelands on utilization, conservation, re-habitation and development of range resources in ELNhoud locality, North Kordofan during three seasons, 2011, 2012 and 2013 on communal grazing as opposed to protected rangeland plots in the study areas. The samples were taken from four sites in this following: in the North (Eial-Elzebear village), in the West Um- Kshow village), in the South Biad village, and in the East Goda village. All those areas were on open grazing (control). The inventory also was taken from two sites (protected areas) at Eastern part of Ennuhud locality. Three points were chosen in each site (open and protected). Within each point three transects 100m long were taken in a radiating manner. Two quadrates (1m2)  in each transect were chosen and loop (3/4" diameter) were used for herbage sampling and for recording plant composition, density, frequency, bare soil, ground cover, litter, droplets, plant productivity. The range productivity data was used to determine carrying capacity and stoking rate will be calculated. The range inventory data was analyzed with assistance of excel and M-stat programs. The results indicated that all these parameters in the protected area were higher than on the communal grazed open area. The study concluded that controlled grazing system is the best and suitable management system to the savannah low rainfall woodland area.
